The Bioimpedance Research Technology of Choice

ImpediMed’s bioimpedance spectroscopy devices have been the bioimpedance research technology of choice for nearly three decades. The ability to instantly access raw impedance data over a broad range of 256 frequencies provides a wealth of additional information for researchers. Data such as characteristic frequency, characteristic impedance and cell membrane capacitance are not available from any other bioimpedance technology.

Benefits of Using BIS for Research

Determining accurate fluid and tissue levels in research subjects, human or not, can be expensive, time consuming, and invasive. Many of the standard techniques are not compatible with the goals of the research and sometimes not even possible.

Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) provides a very quick, easy, and non-invasive approach to accurately determining body fluid levels, including discriminating between intracellular and extracellular fluid. This can often also be accomplished on a segmental basis, such as a limb, which is not possible with standard approaches such as isotope dilution analysis. Since BIS is also quick and non-invasive, there is no limit to the number of samples desired.

ImpediMed’s BIS devices provide accurate and precise results for the following:

  • Total body water (TBW)
  • Extracellular fluid (ECF)
  • Intracellular fluid (ICF)
  • Skeletal muscle mass (SMM)
  • Fat mass (FM)
  • Fat-free mass (FFM)
  • Protein and minerals (dry lean mass)
  • Basal metabolic rate (BMR)
  • Phase angle
  • Body mass index (BMI)
  • Segmental analysis
  • Characteristic frequency
  • Characteristic impedance
  • Cell membrane capacitance
  • Hy-Dex® hydration analysis
  • L-Dex® lymphedema analysis
  • HF-Dex heart failure fluid analysis
  • Raw data (resistance, reactance, impedance, and phase at each of 256 frequencies from 3kHz to 1 MHz)

*Note: not all outputs available with all devices.

SOZO bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) device

ImpediMed’s Research Solutions

SOZO Digital Health Platform

SOZO uses ImpediMed’s BIS technology to measure and track critical information about the human body for clinical and research applications. Fluid measurements using BIS are validated using gold standard isotopic dilution techniques. BIS tissue measurements are validated using DXA.

SFB7

ImpediMed’s SFB7 single-channel, tetrapolar BIS device has been used to analyze body composition in healthy individuals and over 40 various disease states or medical conditions.

ImpediVet

ImpediVET is a single-channel, tetrapolar bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) device that measures fluid status and tissue composition for veterinary applications—from laboratory research to clinic.

Clinical Trial Partnerships

AstraZeneca, a global, science-led biopharmaceutical company, has used ImpediMed’s BIS technology to measure subjects’ fluid volumes in their clinical studies. Most recently, the SOZO Digital Health Platform was selected to be used in two Phase II clinical trials currently underway.
