XiTRON Hydra 4200XiTRON Technologies was an early developer in the field of Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS) for estimating intracellular and extracellular water (ICW and ECW), total body water (TBW), fat mass (FM), and fat free mass (FFM) for body composition in healthy individuals. The acquisition of XiTRON Technologies by ImpediMed in 2007 adds the XiTRON Hydra 4200 to the ImpediMed product offering.
In 1990, XiTRON provided the body composition research community with a bioimpedance device capable of measurements at numerous frequencies, and with a wide enough frequency range (5kHz-1MHz) to compute the standard Cole model of biological tissue. Soon after, XiTRON provided its customers with the software for computing the four-dimensional nonlinear Cole model. At the same time, XiTRON also provided its customers with software for computing ECW and ICW volume using equations XiTRON developed from Hanai’s mixture theory.
Today’s XiTRON Hydra 4200 is a 3rd generation, single-channel, tetra polar BIS device that scans 50 frequencies between 5kHz and 1MHz. Its use has been reported numerous times in scientific journals. Scientific studies have also shown the technology to be repeatable and sensitive to small changes, able to detect the volume distribution differences between subjects.
